Butcher Falls

Butcher Falls

Butcher Falls, on Pool Creek in Chautauqua County, drops 10 feet over a blocky rock ledge into a pool eroded out of the Plattsmouth Limestone Member of the Oread Limestone. The rock was formed from sediment deposited in shallow seas during the Pennsylvanian subperiod about 323 million to 299 million years ago. Just beyond the pool, Pool Creek joins Middle Caney Creek.

Butcher Falls, on privately owned Red Buffalo Ranch northwest of Sedan, is accessible to the public. During dry periods, however, the waterfall may not be flowing.
